Best Ways to Curb Printer Towel Price Increases

If your company relies on printer towels to keep printing presses clean and operating smoothly, price increases may be heading your way.

Printer towels are cloth towels that are free of any materials that could scratch (and ruin) printing presses. Many uniform rental companies often provided clients with printer towels upon request, but a number of companies have phased out this practice. Cleaning the used printer towels, which are soaked with flammable cleaning agents, can be a challenge for suppliers because the end-product is combustible.

Since there are fewer suppliers offering printer towels, the uniform rental companies that continue to do so have begun increasing their prices.  Recently ERA has seen prices go from $0.08 per towel to $0.15 per towel an increase of 87.5%.

Despite price increases, companies that rely on printer towels to clean their printing press equipment have a few options to consider to keep costs in line.

1. Consider regional suppliers

Many of the larger suppliers that offer printer towels, like Aramark and Cintas, often contract their printer towel services with smaller, regional players. It may be worthwhile to research local options that can provide printer towels at a competitive price and develop a better deal by working with regional suppliers directly.

2. Find an alternate

The industry is also developing alternative disposable paper options that don’t carry the same cleaning challenges of traditional printer towels. But not all disposable printer towels are of equal quality and some can leave lint particles on machines, which can affect the quality of print projects. Still, when a supplier introduces a disposable option, you should still test it to see if it works for your facilities.

3. Consult with your industry peers

It’s also important to consult with others in the industry to determine what cost-effective methods and alternatives are available that could work for your company. By talking with industry peers at trade shows, conferences and other events, you can find options that your organization might not have considered previously.

Though the costs associated with using printer towels may be increasing there are steps you can take to mitigate the impact on your organization’s bottom line.
