Cost management for higher education

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) has six campuses attended by nearly 30,000 college-credit students and another 33,000 students enrolled in continuing education or business training classes. The college offers 75 career programs and 3,000 classes taught and supported by a faculty and staff of 2,800.

DMACC’s mission is to help prepare students for a four-year college degree, identify a rewarding career, acquire new skills and satisfy a desire to learn.

Challenge of drastically reduced state funding

DMACC is working with drastically reduced state funding, a challenge faced by virtually all public institutes of higher learning. And like most colleges, DMACC is trying to avoid layoffs and minimize tuition increases. The administration partnered with Expense Reduction Analysts (ERA) Consultants for ideas on how to generate internal funding.

ERA cost-reduction experts used their industry knowledge, proprietary benchmark pricing data and trademarked RFP analytic tools to identify significant saving opportunities in expenses for custodial services and janitorial supplies.

The result was a 21% reduction in custodial services and a 36% savings in janitorial supplies. These savings generated an additional $145,000 a year for the college.

By reducing administrative overhead costs, ERA Consultants have helped the college focus its resources on its core mission ─ education.

The funds generated by ERA will help the college add programs to meet its record enrollment.
