College Uses Savings to Benefit Students & Staff

The Challenge

Founded in 1921, a small university in the Midwest has grown into a well-regarded Catholic institution offering a wide range of programs for undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of faith or belief. With internal budget cuts and decreased levels of endowments and donations, the school faced the prospect of tuition increases and layoffs. The College partnered with ERA for ideas on how to reduce internal expenses to avoid these outcomes.

The Solution

ERA’s cost-reduction specialists used their industry knowledge, proprietary benchmark pricing data and RFP analytic tools to identify savings opportunities for the client. Expenses for office supplies, printing, merchant card fees, copiers, janitorial services and waste management were reviewed, uncovering savings in several cost categories.

The Results

For office supplies, ERA’s analysis resulted in a 20% decrease in costs, and a 34% reduction in printing expenses. Copier expenses were trimmed by 10% and merchant card fees, 20%. The College’s expenses in the areas of janitorial services and waste management were in line with fair market pricing, and no savings were detected. Thanks to a successful partnership with ERA leading to a brighter financial future, the College can continue to provide students with a quality education in a values-based environment.
