Hospice Looks to ERA Again for Savings

The Challenge

Operating multiple hospice care sites in Kentucky, in 2011 Hospice of the Bluegrass (HOB) worked with ERA to achieve a $94,400 savings in payroll processing services, remaining with their incumbent provider at greatly reduced rates. This represented a savings of 46.5%. The following year, they asked ERA to determine if there were savings in other expense categories including medical gases, medical supplies, printers and copiers, office supplies and uniforms.

The Solution

Leveraging their in-depth industry knowledge and applying the same methodology used in the previous payroll processing study, ERA’s cost-reduction specialists examined savings opportunities for medical gases, medical supplies, printers and copiers, office supplies and uniforms. Extra savings were detected in these expense categories thanks to ERA specialists’ industry knowledge and experience, an understanding of best practices, RFP analytic tools and benchmark pricing data.

The Results

For medical gases, a review of expenses was prompted by price increases from HOB’s incumbent provider. ERA issued an RFP to suppliers leading to a savings of 32%, or $22,000 yearly, using HOB’s incumbent vendor and alternative service suppliers for medical gases. For medical supplies, ERA’s analysis identified a savings of 6%, or approximately $40,000 annually; for printers and copiers, a detailed examination of maintenance costs led to a savings of almost $30,000, or 43% per year. No additional savings were found in the categories of office supplies and uniforms, validating HOB’s pricing review processes.

“Expense Reduction Analysts is great to work with. They truly optimized savings from our vendors and we were able to use those savings to further grow our business.”
